Bogotá.- After the significant drop in 2020 (the year of the Covid-19 pandemic), which left it at the lowest levels in more than a decade, Foreign Direct Investment has been recovering ground in recent years and in 2023 reached its highest value since 2014.
Indeed, according to records of the exchange balance of the Bank of the Republic, last year FDI in the country totaled US$13,068 million, a figure 16.04% higher than that observed in 2022, when it was closer to US$11,212 million. It was also higher than the records of 2021 (US$7,180 million), 2020 (US$6,831 million) and 2019 (US$10,280 million).
In fact, the 2023 result is the highest in nine years, as it should be remembered that, in 2014, foreign investment in Colombia reached US$15,109 million; in 2013, US$16,849 million; in 2012, US$16,603 million; and, in 2011, US$15,033 million.
The growth observed in 2023 was mainly driven by two months in particular: April, when the highest monthly inflow of funds through this channel since the exchange balance has been recorded (US$1,956 million) and June, with an inflow of US$1,724 million.
The behavior of the other months was as follows: in January, US$1,060 million arrived in Colombia; in February, US$928 million; in March, US$881 million; in May, US$975 million; in July, US$1,007 million; in August, US$845 million; in September, US$968 million; in October, US$880 million; in November, US$917 million; and in November, US$917 million.
