Bogotá.-The level of reservoirs in Colombia continues to free fall due to the excess of temperatures caused by the El Niño phenomenon, and now stands at 35.33% of its capacity, increasing the risk for the country’s hydroelectric plants.
According to the most recent report of XM, operator of the National Interconnected System (SIN) and administrator of the Wholesale Energy Market of Colombia, this level, compared to the one reported last January 31, when it was 59.88%, is 41.01% below its capacity, registered this Wednesday.
This variable shows the water reserves stored in the reservoirs of the National Interconnected System (SIN) with respect to the total storage capacity.
It is expected that as El Niño transits and La Niña begins with rains, the reservoirs will recover again.
The level of alert by hydroelectric plants is below 27%, increasing costs and a possible blackout, and as of March 20, the level is 8.33% above this margin.
However, in eastern Colombia this level is at 16.50% of its capacity. In the Caribbean, it is at 51.83%; Central, 45.02%; Antioquia, 35.82%; Valle, 35.82%.
El Niño is a change in atmospheric dynamics caused by an increase in ocean temperature. Due to its location, some areas of Colombia experience rainfall.
