Bogotá. –Enel Colombia declared two power generation groups unavailable due to blockades to the Paraíso hydroelectric power plant, which could jeopardize the country’s energy supply, mainly for the stability and reliability of the system in the eastern region, including Bogotá, in the context of the El Niño Phenomenon.

Despite the willingness to dialogue with the protesters and the interest to address their concerns, this situation led Enel to declare unavailable two of the three generation groups of the Paraíso and Guaca hydroelectric power plants chain, which contributes 400 megawatts (MW) of its 600 MW of installed capacity to the National Interconnected System.

The blockades are being carried out by some people from the community of the municipality of El Colegio who express their disagreement with the alleged non-compliance with the agreements reached at the work tables that have been held between the parties since the second half of 2021.

However, Enel Colombia states that to date 75% of the 28 agreements have been executed, including activities that are carried out on a recurring basis, such as the hiring of local labor through contractors.

«While the Company respects the right to social protest and has shown its willingness to dialogue with the protesters to address their concerns in the appropriate spaces, it vehemently rejects the de facto actions, the acts of vandalism that have been recorded on the infrastructure of the power plant, and the acts of vandalism that have been recorded on the infrastructure of Enel Colombia.
